Artem   Garin   set   a   new   record   having   learned   23,000   characters   after   the   Pi number.   From   his   part,   he   claims   that   he   simply   memorizes   well.   About   Artem, his   point   of   view   on   the   Pi   number,   and   also   about   whether   the   chance   to develop the memory of ordinary mortals you can read in our interview. JBN:   This   is   already   your   third   record.   How   long   it   takes   to   prepare   for each   record?   Does   it   make   it   easier   or   more   difficult   to   memorize   numbers each time? Artem   Garin:   For   the   first   record   I   was   preparing   for   about   two   months,   and   at that   time   the   last   week   was   particularly   active.   For   the   second   record,   I   was preparing   the   same   way.   But   to   the   last   record,   I   prepared   more   than   half   a   year and   two   active   last   months. This   is   due   to   the   fact   that   this   time   was   a   completely different   mechanic   record   and   the   fact   that   I   have   greatly   changed   the   living conditions   of   preparation.   It   should   be   noted   that   such   time   is   spent   not   to   learn directly,   but   to   remember   very   quickly   and   not   to   be   mistaken.   If   I   take   the   total technical time to learn 23,000 signs, it took me just over 50 hours. JBN:   This   question   you   run   over   many   times...   Tell   us   please   at   what   point   did   you   become   interested   in   the   development   of memory and the number Pi? Artem   Garin:      I   became   interested   in   the   development   of   memory   after   my   first   record.   However   paradoxical   it   may   sound,   but   before that,   I   was   only   interested   in   what   my   memory   is   capable   of   without   development.   I just    memorized.    And    yes,    this    is    a    well-known    story    that    for    the    first    time    I discovered   my   abilities   in   the   second   year   of   university   when   I   had   to   pass   the physics    exam    and    I    had    to    learn    3    tomes    of    physics    in    2    days.    I    did    it    and understood   that   I   can.   But   only   after   the   first   record   I   realized   that   I   could   do   more   if I put some effort into the furnace of my abilities. JBN:   What   exactly   is   Pi   means   for   you?   In   the   US,   for   example,   many   people simply   cook   the   pie   adorned   with   figures   on   the   day   of   the   Pi   number.   After all, the words Pi and Pie are consonant in English. Artem   Garin:   No,   for   me   the   Pi   number   is   definitely   not   a   pie.   Perhaps   for   all   who have   even   delved   into   the   natural   sciences,   it   is   clear   that   the   Pie   number   is   the same   coefficient   that   connects   parts   of   one   of   the   most   important   geometric   forms of   our   universe.   It   is   like   the   basic   indicator   of   our   world,   the   number   underlying many   physical   processes.   So   for   me,   the   Pi   number   is   the   god's   phone   number. Once   we   can   definitely   find   in   it   a   regularity,   and   hence   hear   from   the   other   end   of the wire: "Hello". JBN:   Have   you   already   decided   for   yourself   how   many   more   numbers   after the Pi number you want to overpower? Artem   Garin:   As   much   as   my   brain   requires.   However,   what's   the   thing:   I   always   hunting   a   new   load.   I   used   to   be   afraid   of   1000 signs.   It   seemed   to   be   something   titanic.   Then   5000.   Oh   hell,   I   thought,   you   need   to   be   a   genius   to   master   this.   And   then   came   10 000.   Well,   it's   not   funny   at   all,   I   thought   about   10   000.   But   now   I   know   23   000   and   it's   not   enough   either.   Now   I   do   not   believe   that   you need   to   be   a   genius   for   100,000.   This   is   perseverance   and   concentration   work.   And   thanks   to   this   work,   get   excellent   results,   which are pleasant to transfer to the rest of the activity. And then when my brain misses and wants more, there will be more. JBN:   Please   tell   us   about   the   School   of   Development   of   Memory   at Sumy   State   University,   the   director   of   which   you   are.   How   are   the classes   built   in   it?   Is   this   a   specific   course   with   a   specific   amount   of lessons   or   do   you   prepare   something   new   every   time?   How   many people usually visit it? Artem   Garin:   The   School   of      Development   of   Memory   at   Sumy   State University   is   a   small   facultative   where   I   teach   people   in   the   classical university   manner   (not   using   modern   training   or   superintensive)   how   to memorize.   I   teach   what   memory   is   and   how   to   use   it,   but   at   the   same time,   I   talk   about   the   paramount   importance   of   discipline   for   success   in this   matter.   There   is   a   theoretical   and   practical   stage   of   training   for   three different    groups:    schoolchildren,    students    and    people    with    education. Recently,   less   and   fewer   people   are   visiting   it,   given   the   events   in   our country,   they   are   more   likely   to   attend   English   courses   to   get   away   from here quicker. JBN:   You   also   participated   in   the   show   "Amazing   People".   How   did you get on this show and what did you particularly like about it? Artem   Garin:   I    got   through   the   invitation   of   editors   of   The   Amazing   People.   At   the   beginning   I   refused,   thinking   that   because   of   the political   situation   they   were   preparing   a   shame   for   me,   but   then   I   decided   to   risk-glorifying   my   city   and   agreed.   Most   of   all   I   liked   the piano on this show. There's an excellent grand piano behind the curtains. JBN:   How   many   percents   of   the   capabilities   of   our   memory   do   we   use?   Can   an   ordinary   person   begin   to   develop   his/her memory and succeed it, if for example at the age 25-30 years? Artem   Garin:   I   can   not   say   how   many   percents   of   our   brain   we   use.   This,   probably,   no   one   can   say   within   the   framework   of   one person   and   even   more   so   in   relation   to   all   the   people.   I   think   that   these   percentages   and   the   once-existing   myth   about   3-4%   of   the involved   brain   are   all   pseudoscientific   and   erroneous.   Most   people   who   are   capable   of   learning   are   capable   of   development, especially at the age of 25-30. Everything determines motivation and discipline. JBN: What's the next top for you? Artem Garin: I do not like to talk about the future tops. I will inform you from there after I'll be scrambled. JBN: You   have   a   son.   Do   you   think,   he   will   follow   you   in   the   work   of   developing   of   the   memory   and   memorizing   by   the   heart huge amounts of digital information? Artem   Garin:   It   is   difficult   to   say   whether   he   will   follow   me   or   not.   It   depends   on   whether   he   has   inherited   that   ability   to   memorize, whether   he   will   have   the   desire   to   develop   it   and   make   the   triumph.   I   can   say   for   sure   only   about   my   intention   to   develop   without violence the understanding that it's easy to memorize. It's damn easy.
